Best Western Lord Haldon Country Hotel

Dunchideock, Exeter EX6 7YF, UK – 0844 387 6256

I love it as it is situated out of town with great scenery. The actual address was not quite right as advertised so please check or call for the direction. So you should arrive the hotel before dark as the road leading is very narrow. Facilities are not modern so beware and not disappoint. No lift so you need to carry your suitcases up a few stairs.

Location is very good. Went for a wedding fare, not really much to see or on offer, was very quiet and did not get a feel for the place. More staff than guests! But that said, a beautiful place with great views. offers competitive rates for any type of hotel, from small independent hotels to a five star luxury ones. The site is available in 24 languages and offers over 71000 hotels in 71 countries. Could be useful for you. There are of course several such sites.

Pubs, Gastro Pubs and Bars

The Nobody Inn

Doddiscombsleigh, Exeter EX6 7PS, UK – 01647 252394

A pint by the fireplace at the Nobody Inn has long been a favourite treat of mine, but this is the first time I've been back in ten years, and also the first time I've stayed overnight. I'm pleased to say the room was very comfortable and the breakfast hearty and tasty. Well off the beaten track, it manages to be both a locals' pub and a tourist destination. The food and beer are still excellent, and they still serve a mind-boggling selection of whiskies. My wife and I got talking to a couple who have lived in the village since the 80s, and they confirmed that the Nobody Inn really hasn't changed in decades. That, really, is its charm: if you're after something sleek and modern, look elsewhere. But if you want honest, unpretentious, welcoming and warm, this is the place. Just beware of the uneven floors in the bedrooms after a couple of drinks: the building has had a few centuries to settle, after all.

Great Cosey little pub/restaurant. Even for someone like me who is extremely fussy. Nothing was too much trouble. Portion sizes were just right. Prices were standard and service was great! Highly recommended!

Travel Super Market search and compare prices for hotels all over the world. Could also be useful for you. I This said I was told by a hotelier that the way to get cheap rooms is to ring up the week before and ask for the weekend rate. You can usually get an absolute bargain as they will trying to book all the rooms that they have not sold! Could be worth a try!

If you would like something truly different you might like to have a look at Airbnb. These are mostly B and Bs provided by people on a very informal basis. The may have a spare room, a yurt, a cottage or a barge with space they can receive guests for a night or a month! The website is highly professional. You can really see what you are going to get. Very well worth a look. Airbnb also show 'conventional' B&Bs as well. Enjoy!

Shute Cottage

Shute Cottage, Ashton Lane , Doddiscombsleigh, Exeter EX6 7RE, UK – 01647 252316

Absolutely beautiful! I stayed in the self contained barn, which is full of rustic charm. Fantastic, friendly welcoming owner who couldn't have done more for us. The breakfasts were delicious. Perfect venue. I can't wait to go again.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Shute Cottage this summer - just for one night, sadly. Very pretty location and Carol was so friendly. She served us a delicious breakfast and we really enjoyed talking to her. We only wish we'd been able to stay another night.

Campsites and Caravan Parks

Haldon Forest Holiday Park

Clapham, Exeter EX6 7YG, UK – 01392 832312

What a wonderful relaxing time my daughter and i had at this very pleasant site. Straight away we were made to feel very welcome nothing seemed too much trouble. Very well maintained grass areas throughout. Toilet and showers almost 5☆ hotel standard. Lovely people, lovely site and great holiday. Thanks. We will be coming again.....Tim and Kerry (12)

Great camping site. Electric and non electric pitches are situated at the top of the park. Toilets big and clean. The only negative is the caravans parked here for the season, most of them look like they don't ever move and are a bit tatty. Situated 5 minutes from the A38 which is great for going south or North.
